Last night we tried our first attempt to transmit on 500khz. The antenna we used was a long wire (125meter) suspended from a Kite (Powersled24). Wind was about 3Bft and fading. The kite went up to about 100meter and the first signals were heard. Coen PA5KM worked 5 CW stations: PA0AM, PA3BCA, PA1JT, PA3ABK and G3XIZ

All station where 599 even with the antenna wire half on the ground and in the air.

After about 2hours of activity we went qrt as the wind was fading so the antenne/Kite became a problem.

TX : Surplus exciter  by ITT marine.

Power amp : 25W by  ITT marine.

Antenna : 125m wire on a kite about 100m high.

The wind force was about 4-5Bft this excellent for kiting with the Powersled 24. A very long wire was attached to the kite and up it went to about 75meter high. The angle of the wire was about 45degrees. The length of the wire in the air was about 100 meter and about 50 meter still on the drum. After some WSPR RX tests where done the total length of the wire went up in the air.

Stations heard (CW) : PA3EGO, PA3BCA

Stations heard (WSPR) : G4JNT

Wind force 4Bft a Powersled 24 and 45 meter wire. The plan was to test a vertical wire antenna for 160m to see if the kite could lift it verticaly this worked.we did not could measure the swr because of some very load HF signals off PA5KT who was competing in the ARRL contest.

but the expirment went from 160m to 500khz and we heard on WSPR G4JNT -10dB and PA3EGO +5dB

next test is scheduled for friday evening 26-02-2010 from 1800UTC weather permitting ;-)

After some weeks of snow, ice and to strong wind finally the wind was at the right strength and we tried to lift a 1/4 wave vertical antenna with a kite.

The kite wich was used is a powersled 24.

because it was daytime there where not so many signal but we heard G4JNT on WSPR and we spotted some strange CW signals on 501.6Khz.

The antenna was a thin steel wire donated bij Jan,NL6584 and was also used as the kite line. the kite went up to about 75meter and we had about 100meter of wire in the air at a angle of about 45degrees.

The plan is to use an different antenna to lift the wire to  an more vertical angle and try it on friday evening from 18:00utc.

Here are some pictures and small video of the antenna.

more test/experiments to come

First signal attempt on 500khz with good results ...

The antenna was a 40meter Delta Loop located about 150meter away of the clubhouse. The receiver was a Skanti R5001.

Stations heard were SK6RUD,EI0CF,PA0AM,PA0LCE. all with S9 signals

In the Netherlands it is possible to get a license for experiments on 500kHz.

Stations need to be registered at VERON or VRZA.

Allowed frequencies are 501-504 kHz.

Maximum bandwidth is 100Hz.

PI4Z has been registered.

We are planning to use a Kite to lift a 1/4wave antenna , the transmitter wil be a digital signal generator Schlumberger FS1 and we are looking into using a surplus power amplifier of a former VLF station.
